Shielded cable

A shielded cable is one or more insulated conductors of a cable surrounded by a common conductive layer. The shielding can consist of braided stranded copper (or other metals such as aluminum), non woven spiral winding copper tape, or a layer of conductive polymer. Usually, the protective cover is covered with a jacket.

Application of Shielded Cables

The best practice is to physically separate data or signal cables from parallel "heavy-duty" power circuits by at least 3 inches (75 millimeters).

Analog signal cables used in professional audio applications are typically shielded twisted pair cables terminated in XLR connectors. Twisted pair cables transmit signals in a balanced audio configuration. The audio multi-core cable from the stage to the mixing station is also shielded. Consumers use asymmetric shielded copper wire with a central conductor.
